This coin depicts a place where the people of Häme have congregated for more than a millennium. The medieval stone Church of St. Lawrence in Janakkala was consecrated in 1520, but the people of Häme had been using the location for worship and gatherings for centuries before that.

A clear sacrificial spring from pagan days still bubbles by the church hill.

Available on the release date, 21 October.

Ostrobothnians are represented by a familiar sight on this commemorative coin. Houses in Ostrobothnia were traditionally erected to an imposing height and painted red. A family's house was modified according to their situation, with extensions and new rooms being added as the family grew.

Ostrobothnian houses are considered to represent the pinnacle of folk architecture, and some even see classical and renaissance influences in them.

Available on the release date, 21 October.

A coin for the painter of the Finnish soul. The work of Eero Järnefelt (1863-1937), one of the masters of the golden age of Finnish art, is imprinted on the hearts of the Finnish people. If anyone, Järnefelt has earned his commemorative coin.

Järnefelt was an astute and profound portraitist, who understood the everyday life of the common man. The artist's portrayal of nature is also a portrait of the Finnish soul. Järnefelt's rugged landscapes, and those depicting Koli in particular, are said to portray the place where we realise we have come home.

The master artist found inspiration in Savonia

The works of legendary Finnish artist Eero Järnefelt were almost never painted at all. While his father encouraged his son to study art, Eero himself wanted upon matriculation to become a school teacher. Fortunately he listened to his father, and as a result Finland was blessed with a master of landscape and portrait painting for its golden age of art.

Eero Järnefelt (1863−1937) was born into a family steeped in culture − his mother was from St Petersburg and his father was a general. Järnefelt studied the arts in both St Petersburg and Paris. Like his contemporaries, he sought inspiration from Karelia, but only from Savo and Savonians did Järnefelt find the Finland evoked in his paintings depicting the people.

Among the artist’s most famous works, for example, Burning the Brushwood (1893) and A Farmer with his Workers (1893) were painted in Savo.

Melancholy and humour

While Järnefelt was, on the one hand, a painter of idyllic and harmonious landscapes, he was also a perceptive portrait artist who, despite his socially advantaged background, understood the day-to-day life of ordinary people.

There is also a gleam of humour in the artist’s work, which at first glance appears melancholy, as Järnefelt’s depictions of ordinary people portray the tomfoolery of peasants and farmers with a sense of amusement.

The essence of Koli

As a landscape artist, Järnefelt was in a class of his own, and the rugged landscapes he painted have achieved a symbolic status in Finland’s history. They are said to describe the Finnish soul, the place where we know we have come home. Järnefelt especially loved the landscapes of Koli, which he painted until his death.

As a counterbalance to picturesque scenery, Järnefelt found poetic beauty in the small details of nature, such as flowers growing at the edge of a shore. The artist painted natural themes such as these in the family’s atelier home on the shore of Lake Tuusula, where a community of other prominent Finnish artists also lived.

The artist's favourite subject was his own family

Järnefelt achieved practically the status of official portrait artist for the nation in the 1890s. He painted works depicting a number of personages active in cultural life, yet his favourite theme was his own family.

The artist continuously drew and painted both his actress wife and their five children in intimate portraits and in ordinary day-to-day pursuits.

Alongside his other career, Järnefelt served for many years as a teacher at the University of Helsinki’s drawing school, thus realising his dream to be a teacher − although in a slightly different capacity to that he envisaged as a young man.
