Mint of Finland schreef:

A lighthouse island full of stories. The Tankar lighthouse was first lit in 1889. Since that time, it has guided mariners toward the harbour of Kokkola 15 kilometres away.

The lighthouse island of Tankar is full of stories, and you might imagine the rocky island larger than its 19 hectares. The island features a church, ornithological station and pilot station, and hundreds of fishermen could stay there at a time in the old days.

According to many historical sources, the lighthouse was designed by the same Parisian agency that designed the Eiffel Tower. In fact, the Tankar lighthouse is the Eiffel of the Bay of Bothnia, since it is undoubtedly one of Finland’s most luminous lighthouses. You do not have to content yourself with admiring the landscapes lit by the beacon at ground level, since those with a touch of the daredevil can climb to the top of this functioning lighthouse.

The coin series includes the Finnish metal circulation coins for 2013. The series is complemented by a jeton struck to commemorate the Tankar lighthouse – the eighth commemorative medal in the "Finnish lighthouses" series.

Mint of Finland schreef:

Deliveries of the My First Coins series 2013 will begin in week 5.

All of the euro coins of Finland for the year 2013, 2012, 2011, 2008, 2007 or 2006 are now offered here in their own packages. The coin sets 2013, 2012 and 2011 depict a story of Captain Terror O’Waters. The coin sets 2008 and 2007 adventure in jungle and the coin set of 2006 in zoo.

The ”My first euros” coinage contains all the Finnish euro coins for 2013, 2012, 2011, 2008, 2007 or 2006. The coins of 2013, 2012 and 2011 are packed in an album, narrating the adventures of Captain Terror O’Waters and Crab Reedy-Legs and their friends.

The “My first euros” album is a beautiful gift for a newborn, for a godchild, or for a child starting school. It is also a suitable gift to commemorate a year, when something significant happened.

The children’s own coin set is like a primer: it teaches many things about money. For instance, one can start school by identifying the big coins. Then one can progress to numbers: one euro is a hundred small cent coins or ten ten-cent coins.

A coin set of one’s own awakens the sleeping collector to an interest in the aesthetics of money. Shiny coins are beautiful. They have fine details which can be viewed through a magnifying glass, revealing something new. Why does each coin have two “L” letters? What is the European Union? Coins raise many questions that are waiting for an answer.

The album contains a lucky coin, which collectors call a mint medal or a commemorative medal. The medal has space for engraving an important name and date.

Graphic designer Georgi Eremenko produced the drawings for the coin sets 2013, 2012 and 2011 and the mint medal was designed by artist Hannu Veijalainen. 3 000 examples of the children’s coin set will be issued.

2.5.2013 Landmarks of Finland Proper, Aland and Satakunta to receive their commemorative coins
Mint of Finland will publish the new provincial coins in Turku’s Market Square on 7 May!

The people of Turku will be the first to get their hands on the long-awaited Provincial Buildings commemorative coins depicting Turku Cathedral, Sälskär lighthouse and the ancient burial cairns of Sammallahdenmäki. These are the newest coins in a series that reminds us of the importance of built landmarks to the people and culture of the regions of Finland.

Mint of Finland will sell these brand-new commemorative coins in Turku’s Market Square on Tuesday, 7 May. Mint of Finland’s stall will offer both new and previously launched coins in the Provincial Buildings series, as well as other new products and old favourites from the Mint of Finland.

The Provincial Buildings coin series kicked off in December 2012 with coins depicting buildings in Lapland and Uusimaa. The rest of Finland’s historical provinces will receive their coins by the end of 2013. All the coins in the series are designed by architect Petri Neuvonen.
Long-awaited coin series continues with three new coins

Finland Proper – Turku Cathedral

The coin of Varsinais-Suomi depicts Turku Cathedral. Throughout the centuries, the national shrine of Finland has been a living part of the city’s skyline, growing with the province and its population. The cathedral was built over several stages, and its architectural influences include the Romanesque and Gothic styles.

Aland – Sälskär lighthouse

This lighthouse, ranking among the most beautiful in the Baltic Sea, is located far out on the open sea, in the straits separating the Åland Islands from Sweden. The lighthouse was first lit in 1868, but its light has now gone out. This coin pays homage not only to the lighthouse on Sälskär Island, but also to the fifty-odd other lighthouses that have guided mariners on the coasts of Finland.

Satakunta – Burial cairns in Sammallahdenmäki

Sammallahdenmäki in Rauma was designated as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1999, being the most important site of Western Bronze Age Culture in Scandinavia. Many of the cairns in Sammallahdenmäki have their own names and stories. The best-known cairn, the Kirkonlaattia (Church Floor), is said to be built by the goblins of Finnish folk-lore known as “hiisi”. Sammallahdenmäki is an unparalleled site in Finland and an exceptional one in Scandinavia as well.

Runs of 55,000 UNC quality coins and 10,000 proof quality coins will be minted of each provincial coin.

This coin series that commemorates buildings takes up the theme of the historical provincial coins launched earlier by the Mint of Finland and designed by Nora Tapper. The Provincial Buildings coins being released carry the same reverse, designed by Nora Tapper, as the previous series of provincial coins.

You can also purchase the Provincial Buildings coin series as from 7 May 2013 on Mint of Finland’s website at www.suomenrahapaja.fi

Mint of Finland schreef:

Mint of Finland publishes a new ethical collector coin

Multicultural society is celebrated with a silver coin

In a multicultural society, everyone has the right to choose their own way of life. The Ministry of Finance has authorised Mint of Finland to launch a collector coin in celebration of multiculturalism on 17 June 2013. The new coin is part of Mint of Finland's Ethical Collector Coins series, in which themes such as peace and safety have been explored in the past.

The obverse of the Multiculturalism coin is adorned by a symbolic representation of Earth's many cultures, in the form of a selection of symbols from different eras and regions. A design competition was held for the coin's design, and the winner was artist Hannu Veijalainen.

”This intriguing and topical subject inspired me to make a submission. The look of the coin I designed draws from history and the way cultures have always developed in interaction with one another,” says Hannu Veijalainen, designer of the Multiculturalism coin.

The reverse of the coin sports small Saint John's Arms symbols, familiar from old Finnish coins, for example. In the Nordic countries, the symbol was believed to protect its bearer from bad luck. The symbols on the obverse include the emblem of the Sámi god of thunder (centre) and the African antelope symbol Chiwara that is connected to agriculture (top left).

”Cultural diversity is not a threat to anyone's own culture. Rather, it provides all of us with the opportunity to broaden our horizons and gain new experiences. With its Ethical Collector Coins series, Mint of Finland wants to remind us of the importance of upholding positive values. We use collector coins to convey these themes to future generations in a worthy manner,” says Mint of Finland CEO Paul Gustafsson.

Mint of Finland has been highlighting ethical issues with collector coins since 2009, when the first coin in the Ethical Collector Coins series was struck. Ethical subjects portrayed prior to 2013 have included Equality and Tolerance (2012), Protecting the Baltic Sea (2011), Children and Creativity (2010) and Peace and Security (2009). The mintage of the silver Multiculturalism collector coin is 15,000 pcs and the coin's nominal value is €20.

Savonia – St Olaf's castle
fi002.jpg
In the heart of Savonia, in the middle of a lake landscape rises St Olaf's Castle. Over the centuries its solid walls have witnessed the changes in rule over Savonia, the thunder of numerous battles and the echoes of opera festivals. The marks of Swedish as well as Russian rulers are apparent in the rich tapestry of the castle’s architecture. The coin depicts one of the castle's towers and a branch of rowan, the provincial tree of North Savonia.

Karelia – The Imatra power plant
fi003.jpg
The Imatra power plant built on the rapids combines the wonder of natural forces and a tour de force of engineering. Imatra rapids are Finland's oldest tourist attraction, and people have come even from abroad to admire their surging white waters as early as the 18th century. The power of the rapids was harnessed for hydroelectric power in 1929, but for the enjoyment of tourists the dam is opened about a hundred times a year.

To celebrate this, a gold coin has been minted featuring a crown and an opening curtain representing the power of the Emperor of Russia on the reverse side and a section mark on the obverse side representing the beginning of democracy.

A rare collector's item from Mint of Finland

6,000 gold coins, with a nominal value of €100, will be minted and sold in three kinds of packages. 200 numbered gold coins are packed in unique collector's boxes together with a special €2 coin of proof quality commemorating the 1863 Diet. These gold coins have a sequential number stamped on the edge.

Please see here for how to order one of our special packages.

5,800 gold coins are packed in elegant boxes and accompanied by a certificate of authenticity. The coin is also available in Iittalas clear Vitriini box. In this glass case, the coin becomes an elegant decoration. These unnumbered gold coins can be purchased from 17 September 2013 from the Mint of Finland webstore.
