Mint of Finland schreef:

The first mark and numismatics

Now there is a collectors’ collector coin. This is the only Finnish gold coin to be struck in 2014. It commemorates the birth of Finland’s national currency, the markka, and honours scholars and collectors of metal coins. The first Finnish mark was struck in silver at Mint of Finland on 15 October 1864.

The first silver Finnish mark was minted at Mint of Finland on 15 October 1864. The obverse of the first mark and numismatics gold coin depicts the two-headed Russian eagle, whose heart-shaped heraldic shield bears the lion coat of arms of Finland.

The obverse depicts the two-headed Russian eagle with the lion coat of arms of Finland on the shield at its centre. The oak leaves and decorative ribbon encircling the silver mark’s reverse are repeated on the new ‘First Mark and Numismatics’ collector coin.

The only Finnish gold coin to be struck in 2014, it commemorates the silver mark and also honours the numismatists who collect and study metal coins.
Numbered special edition packaged in Vitriini glass cases
The numismatist gold coin is presented in a handsome wood box. There is also a special edition of the coin limited to 100 coins, presented in a Vitriini glass case designed by Iittala. The numbering, in the 1/100 format, is stamped on the obverse of the coin and is clearly legible despite the small size of the coin. The numbered gold coins will sell for EUR 600.

For further information on the numbered special edition, please contact the Mint of Finland customer service at tel. (09) 8943 4343. The numbered gold coins will be booked on a first-come-first-served basis. Act fast to ensure this addition to your collection, as the numbered special edition is limited to only 100.

The Literacy coin is an excellent gift for new graduates and a beautiful addition to any collection. This gorgeous Ethical collector coin, issued by Mint of Finland, represents the importance of different readers. Order the beautiful collector coin for yourself or a loved one.
Symbols, Braille, notes – we have told our stories using many signs from one age to the next. Literacy is a basic human right, since these signs help us develop ourselves and build equality between the sexes, lasting peace and democracy. In 2014, Finland celebrates the Theme Year of Diverse Literacies, supported by the Ministry of Education and Culture.

The Literacy coin is the sixth coin to be issued in the Ethical collector coins series of Mint of Finland. The first coin of the series, the Peace and Security Coin, is sold out at Mint of Finland. Read more about the decree on the collector coin here http://www.finlex.fi/fi/laki/alkup/2014/20140290 (in Finnish).

The coin dedicated to readers everywhere

The Literacy collector coin features different symbols which humankind has used to communicate throughout history. The obverse of the coin depicts the symbols, which form concentric circles with the infinity symbol at the centre. The infinity symbol is circled by a binary ring which consists of zeroes and ones, which in turn is circled by a ring of musical notes.

The note ring is followed by a ring made up of Braille dots, while the outermost ring consists of letters which spell out LUKUTAITO 2014 ('LITERACY 2014'). The Swedish word for literacy, LÄSFÄRDIGHET, features on the rim of the coin. The reverse of the coin features cave painting patterns forming a ring. The text SUOMI FINLAND and the denomination – €20 or €10 – are on the outer edge.

Gift and collector's item

Mint of Finland will issue two different versions of the Literacy coin. The €10 collector coin comes packaged in a beautiful gift box, while the collector coin with a nominal value of €20 will be sold in a recyclable cardboard package.

Coins for the animals of Finland's provinces

Mint of Finland is launching the third coin series in honour of Finland's historic provinces. The new coin series pays tribute to the emblematic animals of Finland's provinces. The first coins to be released in the series will be the collector coins of Karelia and Savonia on 27 May. The nominal value of the coins is five euros.

Previous Karelian coins have paid tribute to the Imatrankoski rapids (in 2013) and the province's tradition of birch-bark crafts (in 2011).

A proof finish does full justice to the beautiful cuckoo collector coin. Order a polished Karelian cuckoo coin in a protective package that also tells the coin's story.

Savonia's black-throated loon

Northern Nature - Waters, proof

Waters is the crowning glory of a collection. The polished proof quality enhances the coin's beauty, and the protective "capsule" casing of clear plastic keeps it neat and secure.
Waters is the final commemorative coin released in the Northern Nature coin series. Six coins in total have been minted in the highly popular series.

The proof-quality coin is an impressive sight, and each coin is packaged in its own protective casing of clear plastic and delivered in a cloth purse bearing the logo of Mint of Finland. The purse also includes a certificate of authenticity that recounts the coin's story and technical specifications.

Salt and fresh

Our Northern waters are an exceptional blend of sea and lakes, ice-covered wintry expanses and summer shores teeming with waterfowl and their broods. Aquatic ecosystems are frequently fragile, and individual species can be indispensable to the whole.

Kelp, depicted on the collector coin, is one such species, offering shelter and nourishment to countless organisms in the Baltic Sea. The common jellyfish swimming above the kelp is a marine cosmopolite that can be found in nearly all of the world's seas. This jellyfish is a common sight on the Gulf of Finland and the Finnish Archipelago Sea, particularly in autumn.

Mint of Finland schreef: Ilmari Tapiovaara silver 10- and 20-euro

Mint of Finland is planning to release silver 10- and 20-euro collector coins in honour of designer Ilmari Tapiovaara (1914–1999) on 4 September. Both coins will feature the same motif and were designed by Harri Koskinen, one of the most distinguished Finnish designers of our time. The images of the collector coin's design will be on display in the Design Museum.

This year marks the centenary of the birth of designer Ilmari Tapiovaara, one of the most significant Finnish designers of the 20th century, whose best known works include the Domus and Mademoiselle chairs. Mint of Finland will celebrate Tapiovaara's work by minting a coin which will be released on 4 September 2014. The silver commemorative coin was designed by Harri Koskinen, one of the top names in Finnish contemporary design, who has been awarded the Pro Finlandia medal of the Order of the Lion of Finland.

"Designing the coin was like sculpting within set limits. The assignment offered me an excellent opportunity, as well as a responsibility, to familiarise myself with Tapiovaara's life and work. I wanted the coin to convey both his professional skill and his versatility," says designer Harri Koskinen.
The images of the collector coin will be on display in the Design Museum's Ilmari Tapiovaara – 100 years exhibition from 6 June to 21 September.
