In December 2013 Národná banka Slovenska (NBS) announced a public anonymous competition for the design of a 10-euro silver collector coin featuring the World Natural Heritage - Primeval beech forests of the Carpathians. This unique site spanning the Slovak-Ukrainian border, together with the Ancient Beech Forests of Germany, has been included in the UNESCO World Cultural and Natural Heritage List. Ten designs by nine designers were entered in the competition. In February 2014 the entries were judged by the Committee for the Assessment of Designs for Commemorative Coins and Collector Coins. The expert advisors to the Committee were RNDr. Jana Durkošová, representative of the Slovak Ministry of Environment, and Ing. Marián Gič, representative of the Poloniny National Park Administration.

Based on the expert Committee's recommendation a design by Karol Ličko, which won a reduced first prize, was approved for the coin by the NBS Bank Board. The Committee praised the consistency in the approach to both the obverse and reverse as well as the harmony of their composition. In the opinion of both the Committee and the expert advisors, both sides of the design best evoked the theme in terms of their content and artistic aspect. The obverse depicts typical beech trunks and their root system with typical fauna - a northern lynx. The reverse shows a motif with a rotting beech and fir trunks, symbolising the life cycle in the primeval beech forest ecosystem.

A second prize was not awarded in the competition, since with other designs the Committee praised only one of their sides. A third prize was awarded to PhDr. Kliment Mitura. His design was found interesting for the high thematic and sculptural quality of its obverse. The author depicted a beech trunk together with a new growing forest. The composition includes a typical species of the ecosystem - the Black Woodpecker. However, the Committee found the reverse side featuring a wolf with cub to be not on par with the thematic and artistic qualities of the obverse.

A reduced third prize was awarded to the medal maker Mária Poldaufová. Her design also stood out for only one side - the reverse - which was considered to be the clearest depiction of the topic. The designer depicted the primeval forest life cycle represented by young beech trunks, nuts and rotting wood accompanied by the blossom of a typical plant of beech forests - Dentaria glandulosa. The Committee found the obverse side to be less successful and expressed comments on the fauna depicted as well as the composition.

The silver collector coin is due to be issued in March 2015.

In April 2014 Národná banka Slovenska announced the public anonymous competition for the design of a €10 silver collector coin to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the birth of Ľudovít Štúr. The designs entered in the competition were evaluated anonymously by the Committee for the Assessment of Commemorative and Collector Coin Designs, an advisory body to the NBS Governor. In its opinion, none of the designs satisfied the artistic and/or thematic requirements for the coin. Consequently, the Committee recommended closing the competition without awarding any first, second or third prizes and without approving a design for the coin. It also recommended that the competition be rerun. In July 2014 the NBS Bank Board approved these recommendations, and in August 2014 it announced a second running of the competition. In line with Committee's recommendation, invitations to enter the competition were sent to the designers of the six best-evaluated entries of the first round and to a further four well-known portrait designers of Slovak coins. The competition was also open to others interested in participating.

Twelve designs by thirteen designers were entered in the new competition (one entry being a joint work). The Committee evaluated them on 23 October 2014 and was assisted in this task by an expert adviser, PhDr. Beáta Mihalkovičová from the Museum of Ľudovít Štúr in Modra.

A design by Štefan Novotný won first prize. On the Committee's recommendation, the NBS Bank Board approved his design for the coin and required the author to modify the obverse side by removing ornamental folk motifs and repositioning the Slovak coat of arms into the freed-up space. The Committee praised this design for best capturing the given theme and for the high-quality portrayal of Ľudovít Štúr on the reverse side, considering it to be a particularly faithful likeness that demonstrated highly professional technique. On the obverse side, the depiction of Kriváň mountain was deemed a fitting symbol of Štúr's era and the Slovak country. The quotation of Štúr incorporated into the obverse design was also praised by the Committee as an apt choice. The expert adviser concurred with the Committee's selection and with its recommendation for the removal of the ornamental motifs. The designer expressed reservations about modifying the design, but nevertheless respected the Bank Board decision. In the end, he submitted two modified designs, one matching the requirements and another with a simplified decoration; the Bank Board approved the former in line with its original decision.

Second prize was awarded to Karol Ličko. The Committee was impressed by the quality of composition and by the way the design captured the traditional perception of Štúr as a historical figure. The central motif on the obverse side is Kriváň mountain, accompanied by a reference to Štúr's work. The reverse side depicts Štúr and the tower of Devín castle.

Third prize went to Ivan Řehák, with the Committee singling out the superb technique in his portrayal of Štúr on the reverse side. Alongside the portrait are Štúr's name and the dates of his birth and death. This depiction, in contrast to traditional portrayals, has an original perspective that brings out well Štúr's spiritual dimension. Consequently, the Committee recommended that this portrayal of Štúr, after required modifications, be used for the national side of the €2 commemorative coin featuring the same anniversary (the terms of the competition allowed for one of the entered designs to be used in this way). The NBS Bank Board agreed with this recommendation and approved the design for the commemorative coin.

The silver collector coin and €2 commemorative coin are due to be issued in October 2015.

In September 2014 Národná banka Slovenska announced an open competition for the design of a €100 gold collector coin featuring "World Natural Heritage - Primeval Beech Forests of the Carpathians". This unique habitat located in Slovakia and Ukraine is included in UNESCO's World Heritage List, together with the ancient beech forests of Germany.

Twelve designs by the same number of designers were entered in the competition. In November 2014 they were evaluated anonymously by the Committee for the Assessment of Commemorative and Collector Coin Designs, which was assisted in this task by an expert adviser, Marián Gič, representing the Poloniny National Park Administration.

A design by Mária Poldaufová won first prize. In line with the Committee's recommendation, the NBS Bank Board approved her design for the coin. The Committee praised the design for its artistry and the way it encapsulated the theme. Prominent on the obverse side, in the lower centre, is the rosalia longicorn (Rosalia alpina), a sacrophage closely identified with the Carpathian primeval beech forests. Above and extending to the upper and side edges is a semicircular composition depicting Carpathian toothwort (Cardamine glanduligera) - a typical flora of these forests. The reverse shows various natural features that together represent the structure and cycle of life in the primeval beechwood ecosystem. With the depiction of decomposing tree trunks, flowing water, a beech stand, and beech nuts, the designer's idea is to capture the nature of the primeval forest and the changes it undergoes.

Second prize was awarded to Miroslav Hric. The Committee appreciated the high quality of his sculpting technique and depiction of the theme. The obverse design features fauna and flora typical of the primeval beech forests - the black woodpecker (Dryocopus martius), rosalia longicorn, and Carpathian toothwort. The reverse side illustrates the uninterrupted life cycle of beech trees, from their sprouting to decomposition.

Third prize went to Peter Valach. The design is interestingly divided into four irregular sections. The dynamism of the composition on both the obverse and reverse sides is considerably enhanced by the arrangement of the text. The principal pictorial features are fauna typical of the habitat - the lesser spotted eagle (Aquila pomarina) on the obverse side and a Ural owl (Strix uralensis) with owlet on the reverse. The design also captures well the life cycle of the primeval beech forest, with depictions of trees, decomposing trunks, and beech nuts.

Additional prizes for the high quality of their entries were awarded to Karol Ličko and Kliment Mitura.

The gold collector coin is due to be issued in December 2015.
